Industrial tycoon Ratan Tata and the Assam government have started an innovative journey to build a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Jagiroad, Assam, marking an important move forward in technology. This initiative, with an enormous Rs 27,000 crore investment from the Tata conglomerate, has the potential to push Assam onto the global semiconductor production stage.
Ratan Tata himself made the bold announcement, expressing his belief that this project would not only completely transform Assam’s industrial landscape but also establish the state as a major player in the world semiconductor market. Tata Group has already led a number of projects through a collaboration with the Assam government, such as the construction of cancer treatment hospitals throughout the region, showing a dedication to both social welfare and industrial development.
This announcement, which has a financial impact of about Rs 1.25 lakh crore, follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s revolutionary ceremony on March 13 where the foundation stones for three semiconductor facilities were laid. As part of an intentional effort to strengthen India’s semiconductor capabilities, the Tata Group plans to open two of these plants, one in Gujarat and one in Assam.
India’s semiconductor sector is still in its early stages, but with large investments and smart partnerships, it has the potential to grow rapidly. The semiconductor plant in Morigaon, Assam, is expected to be led by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (“TSAT”) and have a 48 million chip production capacity per day. With a focus on industries like automotive, consumer electronics, telecom, mobile phones, and electric vehicles, this facility will prove to be crucial in meeting domestic demand and possibly exporting to international markets.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, applauded this development as a historic turning point for the area, highlighting how the northeast, which was frequently ignored during earlier industrial revolutions, is now deeply rooted in the technological revolution that Prime Minister Modi is leading. In order to maintain national security and promote innovation, there has been an important change in India’s industrial landscape with the establishment of semiconductor facilities in Gujarat and Assam.
More importantly, given the recent shortages of chips made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic, the upcoming commercial production of semiconductor chips at the plants in Gujarat and Assam, which is scheduled to begin in 2026, is highly significant. This push for domestic manufacturing has the potential to encourage domestic innovation and move India closer to self-sufficiency in important technology areas, in addition to closing the current supply-demand gap.
India’s rise as a global center for semiconductor manufacturing is further confirmed by the American chip maker Micron’s high-end semiconductor fabrication plant in Sanand, Gujarat, which is expected to begin operations by late 2024. Because of these advancements, India is set to reshape the semiconductor industry globally, with Assam arising as a major participant under Ratan Tata’s visionary leadership and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s proactive leadership.
